Step-by-step itinerary
Explore heritage and wildlife in Sri Lanka
- Tour Sigiriya Rock Fortress
- Visit Polonnaruwa Ancient City ruins
- Enjoy Minneriya National Park safari
The experience
You're picked up from your hotel in Dambulla, Habarana or Sigiriya and driven in a private jeep with an English-speaking driver to Sigiriya Rock Fortress first. The site rises 200 meters above the jungle: a 5th-century citadel built by King Kasyapa. You walk through the water gardens and terraces at the base, then climb past the ancient Mirror Wall (carved with poetry over a thousand years old) toward the Lion's Paws, a pair of massive stone paws that once guarded the entrance. From the summit, you get 360-degree views across forests and ruins. The frescoes of celestial maidens are partway up. Your guide explains the site's history and legends as you move through it.
Next is Polonnaruwa, the medieval royal capital, where you explore palaces, shrines and audience halls on foot. The Gal Vihara is the centerpiece: four colossal Buddha statues carved directly into granite, each one distinct in pose and expression. You walk past lotus ponds and stone architecture that shows the precision of ancient engineering. The ruins sit in open landscape with few crowds, and the guide ties the buildings to the kings and battles that shaped them.
The final stop is Minneriya National Park, where you board a private safari jeep to look for wild Asian elephants, monkeys, deer, crocodiles and birds in their habitat. The park's reservoir draws herds, especially in the dry season (July–October), when over 300 elephants can gather: one of Asia's largest concentrations. Your driver knows the routes and watering points where wildlife congregates. The safari timing depends on when you finish the earlier sites, so ask your operator about the best window for your departure date.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 6).
What's the climb like at Sigiriya Rock Fortress?
Sigiriya involves a steady uphill walk through gardens and terraces, then a steeper climb of around 200 meters to the summit. The path is well-maintained with steps and handholds, and you can pause at the Mirror Wall and Lion's Paws before the final ascent. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though the summit climb does require a moderate level of mobility.
Are entrance fees included in the booking price?
Entrance fees to Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya National Park are not included and are paid separately at each site. Sigiriya Rock Fortress entry is optional. You choose at checkout whether to add it to your booking or skip the site.
When is the best time to see elephants at Minneriya?
Minneriya's dry season (July–October, peaking in August–September) brings the largest elephant gatherings, with over 300 animals at the reservoir. The wet season (May–September) offers fewer crowds and lush green landscapes. Your guide can advise on the best safari timing based on your departure date and season.
What's included in the tour price?
Hotel pickup and drop-off from Dambulla, Habarana or Sigiriya; private jeep transportation; an English-speaking driver; water bottle; and the private jeep with expert driver for the Minneriya safari are all included. How long does the full tour take?
The tour runs 6 to 8 hours total, depending on how much time you spend at each site and the safari conditions. The length leaves room for a meal break or a second activity in the afternoon if you start early.
