The experience

If you're staying near Sigiriya with a full day to spend, this tour stacks two very different Sri Lankan experiences into one itinerary. You start at the Polonnaruwa museum to buy tickets, then move through the site on foot with your guide pointing out the Royal Palace, the Gal Vihara (a carved rock temple), the Vatadageya, Rankoth Vihara, Kiri Vehera, the Image House, and the Lotus Pond. The guide takes you to each place in sequence, so you're not wandering the ruins alone trying to figure out what you're looking at.

After you finish at Polonnaruwa, you drive straight to Minneriya National Park and spend around three hours inside by jeep. This is where the wildlife part of the day happens. The park is known for elephant gatherings, and your driver will navigate to the places where they're most likely to be. You're not on a fixed track. The driver responds to what's moving through the landscape and takes you to see it.

The whole day runs nine hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll need to be comfortable sitting in a jeep for stretches and walking through the ruins in the heat, but the tour is built for mixed fitness levels. Children from age six are welcome. Bring sunscreen and a hat. The water is provided.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years). Under 6: they can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Gal Vihara at Polonnaruwa?

The Gal Vihara is a rock temple carved into stone, part of the ancient Sinhalese architectural heritage at the site. Your guide will show you the intricate artistry and explain its place in the ruins you're walking through.

How much time do I spend actually looking at ruins versus driving?

The morning at Polonnaruwa involves walking the site and visiting the museum. The afternoon is the jeep safari at Minneriya. The drive between the two sites is direct, so most of your nine hours is split between the two destinations themselves, not transit.

Will I definitely see elephants in Minneriya National Park?

Minneriya is famous for elephant gatherings, and your driver will take you to the areas where they're most commonly sighted during your three hours in the park. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and the day, so there's no guarantee, but the park is set up specifically for this kind of viewing.

Does the tour include lunch?

Lunch is not included in this tour. You can buy food at the Polonnaruwa site or arrange a stop on the way if you need one. Your driver can help with that.

What's the pickup situation, and how early do I need to be ready?

Your hotel pickup is included. The tour runs nine hours total, so the exact start time depends on where you're staying and how far Polonnaruwa is from your location. Confirm the pickup time when you book.
