The experience

What makes Negombo different from other Sri Lankan coastal towns? The tuk tuk gets you close enough to find out. You'll pass the Negombo Lagoon, a wide estuarine basin fed by small rivers and ringed with fishermen's huts, then pull up to the fish market right on the beach where the catch lands fresh from the boats. Fishermen untangle nets, spread shark and tuna to dry in the sun, and sell live crabs at the stalls: the kind of working waterfront most tourists miss because they do not know where to stand.

The route also takes in the remains of the Dutch Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 1600s and captured and recaptured through colonial sieges until it became what it is now. You'll see St. Mary's Church, a neoclassical structure finished in the 1920s with a ceiling of vivid religious paintings, and the Sri Muthumariamman Temple with its Dravidian granite carvings. Over fifty churches and shrines sit within Negombo's boundaries: the legacy of Portuguese occupation and the reason locals call it "Little Rome." The guide narrates in English or Tamil and carries a stereo so you hear over the street noise. Cold water and an umbrella come with you for the four hours.
