The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the sharp, salty smell at Negombo Fish Market. It’s not subtle—you step out of the tuk tuk and there it is, mixed with the clatter of voices and the slap of fish on wet tables. Our driver, Ruwan, grinned and waved us in like we were old friends. I watched a woman in a bright sari haggle over tuna as if she’d done it every morning for decades (maybe she had). We zipped through Negombo’s streets in that little tuk tuk—wind in my face, dust in my hair—and stopped at St. Mary’s Church. Inside it was dim and cool, with sunlight slanting through colored glass onto rows of wooden pews. Ruwan pointed out faded murals high above us; he told me his grandmother used to bring him here on feast days. I’m not religious but I felt something quiet settle over me for a minute.

The Agurukaramulla Temple was next—there’s this dragon-mouthed archway you walk through (I almost tripped because I was staring up at the giant Buddha statue instead of watching my feet). The clock tower nearby ticks away above the lagoon like nobody told it time has moved on.
