You meet your guide at your hotel and climb into a tuk tuk—the only vehicle that moves fast enough through Negombo's narrow lanes and tight enough to stop at the sites that matter. The route covers six stops across the city's religious and colonial layers. The Ganesha Temple opens first, a Hindu kovil with a strikingly colorful Dravidian-style gopuram covered in sculptures of gods and goddesses; you step inside to see the flowers, incense and lamps of daily worship. St. Mary's Church comes next, one of the largest cathedrals in Sri Lanka, built between 1874 and 1922 with a neoclassical facade and a ceiling painted entirely by a local Buddhist artist, N.S. Godamanne—a detail that alone shows why Negombo's religious identity is layered and unexpected.

The fish market, called Lellama locally, is best visited early in the morning when fishermen unload tuna, crab, prawns and reef fish into the chaos and noise of the wet market. Beyond it lie the dry fish fields, where the day's catch is spread across the sand under the sun in the traditional preservation method—a visually striking sight and a powerful, unique aroma that defines Negombo's identity as a fishing town. The tuk tuk then moves to the Dutch Fort, where only the main gateway and some wall sections remain after the British dismantled most of it in the late 19th century to build the nearby prison; what stands is enough to show the colonial-era architecture and the strategic importance of this coastal location. The route also includes the Dutch Canal, officially the Hamilton Canal, a 14.5-kilometer waterway that runs through Negombo and connects to the lagoon, and the Angurukaramulla Temple, celebrated for its colorful murals and ornate sculptures.
