The experience
The tour starts with a 25-minute drive to a tea factory in the hills above Nuwara Eliya. You walk through the production process (how the leaves are dried, rolled and sorted), then sit down to a complimentary cup of tea while the plantation spreads out below you. The factory shop stocks souvenir tea if you want to take Sri Lankan blends home. From there, a 30-minute drive takes you to a viewpoint overlooking Ramboda Falls and the Kotmale Dam, a panoramic stop where you can see the scale of the landscape without leaving the vehicle.
The main event is Ramboda Falls itself, a short 500-meter climb up steps to the top of the waterfall. The water is cold even when the weather is good, but swimming is possible if you want to. The climb is optional. You can stay at the base if the stairs don't appeal to you. After the waterfall, you have a choice: end the tour with a drop at Gregory Lake, a scenic spot in town, or return directly to your hotel. The drive back takes around 40 minutes.
Because this is a private tour, the pace and the stops are yours to shape. The operator notes the itinerary can be customized, so if there's a site in the area you'd rather see instead of one of the standard stops, you can ask. The tour runs 3 to 4 hours total, which fits into a morning or an afternoon without eating the whole day.
