The experience

Nuwara Eliya sits in Sri Lanka's central highlands, ringed by tea plantations and waterfalls, and this tour moves through both. You start by walking into a tea garden at one of the estates (either Damro Labookellie or Blue Field), where you pluck leaves yourself under the guide's instruction, learning how the hand-picked leaf becomes the Ceylon tea sold worldwide. The factory tour that follows shows you the machinery and the steps that turn fresh leaf into dried tea ready for brewing. You taste the result while looking out over the hillside where it grew.

Ramboda Falls, dropping 109 meters from the surrounding cliffs, is the tour's centerpiece waterfall. The walk to it passes through tea plantations and green hills. You stand in the mist at the base and have time to photograph the cascade and the landscape. The route also includes the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, a red-brick colonial building from 1894 with a clock tower, and the Central Market, where you see how the town's residents shop for vegetables, fruits and flowers grown in the cool hill country. The tuk tuk, a three-wheeled open-air vehicle, is your transport throughout, and the guide narrates in English as you move between stops.

The full day runs six to seven hours. Bottled water and WiFi on board are included. The terrain involves moderate walking, particularly through tea gardens and to the waterfall base, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. The operator notes the tour is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
