The experience
What makes Bundala different from other Sri Lankan parks is the saltwater lagoons that draw both terrestrial wildlife and migratory birds. The morning safari starts with pickup at 5 a.m., entry to the park at 6 a.m., and a two-hour first game drive before a 20–30 minute break near Pathiraja beach facing the Indian Ocean, where you can eat a packed breakfast. A second one-hour drive follows, and you're back at your hotel or the meeting point by 9:30 a.m. The afternoon option reverses the timing: pickup at 1:30 p.m., park entry around 2:30 p.m., and the same two game drives ending at sunset. Longer options (7-hour and full-day) add more driving time and more chances to find animals.
The vehicle is a Toyota Hilux 4X4 with six individual seats, each angled to give a 270-degree view. Your guide is licensed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka and drives. You stay in the Jeep except at designated stops. Herds of elephants, pangolins, barking deer, rusty-spotted cats, jackals, wild boars, langurs, crocodiles and tortoises move through the park year-round. Greater flamingos, cormorants, storks, ducks and spoonbills are common, and the park holds more than 200 bird species total. The operator has run safaris for over 30 years and is the top-rated provider on review sites for more than a decade. It's also the only Sri Lankan safari company mentioned in Lonely Planet.
Park entrance fees (Rs. 6,500, roughly $22 per person) are paid in cash at the gate in Sri Lankan Rupees only: no foreign currency accepted. Bring small bills. If you're staying outside the Tissamaharama area, you can meet the Jeep at the Ajith Safari office in Debarawewa, or arrange a separate transfer for an additional cost by contacting the operator via WhatsApp or email.

Is this one for you?Choose the morning tour if you want to start early and have the rest of your day free. Pick the afternoon option if you prefer a later start and want to end with sunset wildlife viewing. The 7-hour and full-day options give you more driving time and more sightings, so book one of those if you're willing to spend the whole day in the park and want the best chance of spotting rarer animals.

Top questions
How many animals and birds can I actually see in Bundala National Park?
Bundala is home to more than 320 animal species, including elephants, crocodiles, pangolins, barking deer, rusty-spotted cats, jackals, wild boars, langurs, snakes and tortoises. The park holds over 200 bird species, with greater flamingos, cormorants, storks, ducks and spoonbills among the most common sightings.
What's the difference between the morning and afternoon safari options?
The morning safari picks you up at 5 a.m., enters the park at 6 a.m., and returns by 9:30 a.m. The afternoon safari picks you up at 1:30 p.m., enters around 2:30 p.m., and ends at sunset. Both include two game drives and a break. The afternoon option gives you a dramatic sunset backdrop for wildlife viewing.
Do I need to bring my own breakfast, or can I buy it there?
You can bring a packed breakfast from your hotel (many Tissamaharama hotels provide one on request), or buy breakfast from Ajith Safari for $8 per person. There is no cafeteria inside the park, so plan accordingly.
What vehicle will I be in, and how many other people travel with me?
You travel in a Toyota Hilux 4X4 shared with up to five other guests, for a maximum of six passengers total. Each seat is angled to give a 270-degree view, and you stay in the vehicle except at designated stops inside the park.
Is the guide English-speaking, and are they trained for wildlife tours?
Yes, your guide is licensed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka and speaks English. All Ajith Safari drivers hold special licenses issued by the department to operate as safari drivers.
What if I'm staying outside Tissamaharama? How do I get picked up?
If you're in the demarcated Tissamaharama area, hotel pickup is included. If you're staying elsewhere, you can meet the Jeep at the Ajith Safari office in Debarawewa at the scheduled time, or arrange a separate transfer vehicle for an additional cost by contacting the operator via WhatsApp or email.
