Two hours hunting tropical whales off Tenerife's southern coast

You board a licensed six-passenger boat at Puerto Colón and spend two hours in the Teno-Rasca marine reserve searching for tropical whales, dolphins and turtles within three miles of Tenerife's coast. A guide explains the cetaceans you see, a hydrophone lets you hear them underwater, and the boat maintains a respectful distance so animals stay undisturbed. You're back by early afternoon.

2h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Depart from dock 4, Puerto Colón
  • Sail in Teno-Rasca conservation area
  • Search for Calderón tropical whales
  • Observe dolphins, turtles, and seabirds
  • Approach cetaceans without disturbing
  • Photograph and record marine animals
  • Crew explains cetacean information onboard

The Experience

The boat rocks gently as you step aboard at Puerto Colón dock 4. Salt air, the sound of the engine turning over, crew members checking lines. You're about to leave the pier and already the water is alive — dolphins move close to shore here, turtles surface, seabirds wheel overhead. The Bonadea II is small, built to hold no more than six passengers, which means you're not packed shoulder-to-shoulder with a hundred other people straining for a glimpse. The crew has been doing this for 29 years. They know where the Calderón tropical — the resident whale species — tends to move through the Teno-Rasca conservation zone.

Once you're underway, the boat heads out to three miles from the coast, into water a thousand meters deep. This isn't a random search. The crew navigates the Special Conservation Zone, a protected marine strip that's part of the Natura 2000 network, which means the whole operation is licensed by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and the Canary Islands Tourism Department. You're not just watching; you're watching responsibly. When cetaceans appear — and they usually do — the boat approaches at a distance that doesn't stress them. A hydrophone comes out so you can listen to the whales and dolphins underwater, their clicks and calls coming through a speaker. The guide explains what you're hearing, what species you're looking at, why they're here. You can photograph them, record them, ask questions. Migratory whales pass through the Canary Islands seasonally, so depending on when you go, you might see species that don't stay year-round.

The whole thing takes two hours, start to finish. No long drive to a remote port, no all-day commitment. You're back on land by early afternoon, still with the salt in your hair and the sound of whale calls in your head. The boat carries safety equipment, and the crew knows the water. Small groups mean the experience doesn't feel rushed or crowded — you get time to actually watch, not just check a box.

What’s included

Your two hours include on-board guide and educational commentary about cetaceans, a hydrophone to listen to whales and dolphins underwater, all safety equipment, and a small-group experience limited to six passengers maximum. The boat departs from Puerto Colón dock 4.
