The Experience

What makes this boat different is where it sits. Playa San Juan is one of the last traditional fishing ports in Tenerife, and the Sea Passion is the only charter boat based there -- which means you board without queuing behind tour groups, without announcements over a speaker, and without the feeling that you're one of dozens. The boat holds a maximum of 11 people, so the captain can see who needs help with a rod and who wants to fish alone. He's spent years on these waters and knows where the fish are holding and what the Canary coast throws at you in any season.

The fishing itself changes through the morning. You start with bottom fishing at fixed spots along the coast, the boat holding steady while you work light tackle down to the seabed -- this is where jigging comes in, using artificial lures instead of live bait. Then the boat moves, running at about 8 knots with multiple lines out at different depths, so you're fishing the open water as you go. If the conditions and the fish are right, you can drop into deep-sea fishing, where the boat works between 200 and 600 metres down and you use an electric reel to bring up what's down there. All the rods, reels, weights and hooks are on board; you bring your hands and your patience.

The Sea Passion has a cabin, a galley, a toilet and a large covered solarium, so if the Atlantic gets rough or the sun gets too direct, you have somewhere to sit that is not the rail. Bottled water and alcoholic drinks are included, which matters when you're four hours on the water and the salt air makes you thirsty. The captain speaks English and Spanish, so language is not a barrier to understanding what he's telling you about the fish, the coast or what to do when something heavy takes your line.
