The Experience

You start at the Royal Palace, the official residence of Spanish kings since Charles III, then turn toward the Almudena Cathedral—consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993. The guide walks you past the Muslim Walls on Cuesta de la Vega, probably Madrid's oldest surviving structure, linked to the city's medieval origins. Then Calle Mayor opens up, the main thoroughfare that's been threading through the center since the Middle Ages, and you're moving through the heart of it all with maybe seven other people at most.

The walk takes you into La Latina, where the narrow streets crowd together and the oldest section of Madrid folds in on itself.
