The experience

You land in Madrid, drop your bag, and suddenly you have a free afternoon. The Puerta del Sol is ten minutes from most hotels. That's where this walking tour starts, and it's the right place because it's the city's kilometer zero, the point everything else measures from. Your guide walks you through what that square actually is: the Oso and Strawberry Tree monument, the King Charles III statue, and the layers of Madrid stacked underneath the pavement. It's not a lecture. It's a person who knows the city telling you why it matters.

From there you move into the Old Town proper: narrow streets that were laid out when Madrid was still Muslim-founded, before the Bourbons arrived and changed everything. Plaza Mayor comes next, baroque and enormous, and your guide points out the execution scaffolds that used to stand there, the religious ceremonies, the pagan festivals. Then you duck into Restaurante Sobrino de Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world according to Guinness, just to see it. You don't have to eat there, but you walk through and feel the weight of it.
