The Experience

“If these stones could talk, they’d probably gossip,” our guide Carmen grinned, tapping her knuckles on the old wall near Plaza Mayor. I liked her right away. The square was already humming — coffee cups clinking, someone tuning a guitar under one of the archways. Carmen pointed out a tiny window above us, said it once belonged to an executioner. I didn’t expect that detail to stick with me, but it did. You can feel the centuries here — not in a heavy way, just… present.

We wandered down Cava Baja next, which Carmen called “the stomach of Madrid.” She waved at a guy unloading crates of tomatoes for a taberna (he waved back). The air smelled like bread and something frying — maybe croquetas? She told us about the bear and strawberry tree on Madrid’s coat of arms; I tried to pronounce “madroño” and got it so wrong she actually laughed out loud. No judgment though — just warmth. That part felt good.

The Basilica of San Francisco el Grande was bigger than I expected — the dome almost made my neck hurt from looking up. Light spilled through stained glass onto cold stone floors, and Carmen whispered stories about Goya painting here. There was this hush inside, even with traffic outside somewhere. Then we crossed Segovia Bridge (I still think about that view toward the palace), and ended up in Plaza de Oriente where little kids were chasing pigeons between statues of old kings.

By the time we reached the Temple of Debod, the sky was turning that soft orange-pink you only get in dry places like Madrid. It’s odd seeing an Egyptian temple here — Carmen explained how Spain helped save it from flooding in Egypt back in the ’60s. We sat on the grass for a bit while she shared her favorite tapas bars nearby (she even sent us her list via WhatsApp later). The city looked different from up there — quieter somehow. Hard to explain unless you go yourself.
