The experience
The tour opens on the rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, a 1910 building designed by Antonio Palacios, where you get the clearest overview of Gran Vía's three sections and the city beyond. From there your guide, a local architect, explains how the avenue was conceived and built, using historical photographs and plans to show the urban development across each period. You then descend the building's impressive staircase and walk inside, seeing the art-deco details and the spaces where Madrid's cultural life unfolded.
The walk takes you through the first stretch of Gran Vía to the Loewe flagship store, where Ava Gardner shopped before premieres at the nearby Museo Chicote cocktail bar. You enter the Telefónica Building, Madrid's first skyscraper from 1929, and access its cultural foundation to see how it looked when built and after its 2012 renovation. The route continues through the second section past the Paris-Madrid Mall, the city's first luxury shopping center, and the site of the Hotel Florida where Ernest Hemingway covered the Spanish Civil War. You walk the third section with its cinemas and musical theaters, finishing on a rooftop at Plaza de España with views of the Royal Palace, Cathedral, Royal Theater and Casa de Campo forest.
The tour runs about four hours and covers roughly 2 kilometers on foot. Access to the Círculo de Bellas Artes rooftop and the Telefónica Building interior are included. Drinks on the rooftops are optional. If you choose to end on the 27th floor of the Hotel Riu Plaza de España instead, that rooftop access costs extra and varies by time and day.
