The experience
What separates this from a one-off intro dive is that you're enrolled in an actual course from day one. You'll spend the first part on land learning the theory and how to use the gear, then practice essential safety skills before entering the water. The certified instructor walks you through every step (breathing underwater, hand signals, moving in a new environment), so you feel ready before anything happens. The whole thing takes about three hours and happens in Tossa de Mar, a beginner-friendly spot on the Catalan coast.
You only pay for this first session. If you like it, you come back and finish the remaining dives at your own pace to earn your Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver certification, recognized by SSI worldwide. The groups stay small, so the instructor can watch you closely and adjust the pace to how you're doing. All the equipment, teaching materials, diving insurance and liability coverage are included. You just bring a swimsuit and towel.
Before you book, know that you'll need to fill out a medical statement. Diving isn't recommended if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, have heart or lung issues, or have had surgery in the last year. Problems with your eyes, ears, sinuses or breathing also matter. You need at least moderate fitness, and you can't fly within 12 hours before the dive. Children are welcome from age 10.
