The experience

You spend eight hours learning to dive in the seabed around Tossa de Mar, a town on the Costa Brava coast. The course covers the skills you need to dive independently: how to breathe underwater, manage buoyancy, clear your mask and handle basic emergencies. Instructors walk you through each technique in the water, and by the end of the day you have the hands-on practice to pass the certification. All SCUBA equipment is provided, so you bring nothing but yourself and a swimsuit.

The small group size means the instructors can focus on your pace and comfort. You discover the seabed creatures and landscape of Tossa while you learn, so the practice dives are not in a pool but in the actual water you will dive in later. The PADI Scuba Diver card you earn is recognized worldwide and lets you dive to 12 meters with a professional guide on any future trip. Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on your preference.

One constraint shapes the day: you cannot fly for 24 hours after the course ends, so plan this for a day when you have the evening free. You also need to show up 15 minutes before the start time. Late arrivals are not admitted and the fee is not refunded. The course is not suitable if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular conditions that would make physical exertion risky.
