The Experience

I nearly missed the van because I’d set my alarm for PM instead of AM (classic). But our guide Jordi texted me—“Don’t worry, we wait!”—so I stumbled out with coffee breath and no regrets. The drive from Barcelona was quiet except for Jordi’s playlist (Catalan pop, surprisingly catchy), and by the time we reached that first viewpoint over Tossa de Mar, the sky was just starting to blush pink. It smelled like pine needles and salt. I remember thinking, okay, maybe this is worth the early chaos.

The coastal path wasn’t easy—some bits were steeper than I expected—but nobody rushed. Jordi pointed out wild rosemary growing in cracks and told us how locals use it to flavor fish. We passed exactly zero other tourists; just one old man walking his dog who nodded at us like he knew something we didn’t. My shoes got sandy and my shirt stuck to my back where the sun hit hardest. At one point someone asked if this was the “Costa Brava day trip from Barcelona” they’d read about online—Jordi grinned and said “This is better.” Not sure if he was joking or not.

We had free time in Tossa’s old town before the boat ride, so I grabbed a flaky pastry at a café where the owner called everyone cariño. When we slipped into those sea caves, everything went blue-green and echoey—like being inside a shell. Some kids pressed their faces to the glass hoping for fish (we saw maybe two).
