The Experience

The first thing I remember is the weird shape of the Dalí Theatre-Museum against a sky that looked like someone had painted it—blue but not quite real. We’d left Barcelona early (I barely finished my coffee), winding out past Passeig de Gràcia and those Gaudí houses with their wavy balconies. Our guide, Marta, pointed out the Batlló and La Pedrera as we passed. She grew up near Girona and kept slipping little stories about her family into the drive—made everything feel less like a tour, more like being shown around by a friend who actually cares if you’re awake or not.

Figueres surprised me. It’s smaller than I expected, but there was this energy in the streets—kids running ahead of parents, old men arguing quietly outside cafés. The Dalí Museum itself is just… odd. Red walls studded with what look like giant eggs on top (Marta called them “Dalí’s bread rolls”—I still have no idea). Inside was even stranger: gold frames, velvet curtains, paintings that made me squint and laugh at the same time. There was this one room where the floor creaked underfoot and smelled faintly of old wood and something sweet—maybe wax? I caught myself staring at jewels Dalí designed; tiny things but so detailed it almost hurt my eyes.

Afterwards we wandered through Figueres’ backstreets—Marta showed us where Dalí used to get pastries as a kid. She tried to teach me how to order in Catalan (“un xuixo si us plau”) but I definitely butchered it; she laughed and said nobody gets it right on their first try. The day trip from Barcelona felt both packed and slow somehow—I liked that we weren’t rushed.

Costa Brava came later—suddenly there were cliffs dropping into turquoise water, salt on the breeze, and sun-warmed rocks under my hands when we stopped near Lloret de Mar. You could hear gulls echoing off stone walls and kids splashing somewhere below. I didn’t swim (too cold for me), but I sat there for a while just watching light shift across the water. Even now, thinking back, I can almost smell sunscreen mixed with pine needles from the path down to the cove.
