The Experience

I didn’t think I’d care much about leaving Barcelona for a day — I mean, there’s always something happening in the city. But then we’re suddenly rolling out past Eixample’s grid, and it’s quiet. Our guide, Marta, is talking about Catalan history while the city falls away behind us. The air smells different out here, almost salty but not quite; maybe it’s just my imagination getting ahead of the Costa Brava part of the day trip.

First stop: Calella de Palafrugell. It’s one of those places that looks almost staged — whitewashed houses, little boats pulled up on the sand. There was a guy mending nets by hand (he nodded at us but didn’t really look up). Some people went straight for the water, but I just sat on a rock for a bit and listened to the gulls arguing over crumbs. Marta pointed out how you can still see where the old fishermen used to haul their catch right up to the doors. There’s this faint smell — seaweed and sunscreen and coffee from somewhere close by.

Peratallada was next, all golden stone and crooked alleys. It feels like time folds in on itself there; you walk under an archway and suddenly it’s centuries ago. We got a bit lost (on purpose), which was honestly kind of fun — at one point Marta laughed because I kept stopping to touch the walls. They’re rough and cool even in the sun. Lunch was quick — bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil, nothing fancy but somehow perfect after wandering around so long.

The Dali Museum in Figueres is… well, it’s Dali. You either get it or you don’t. I’m still not sure if I do. We spent about two hours inside (tickets weren’t included, so make sure you sort that), wandering through rooms that felt like someone else’s dream logic. One painting had everyone squinting sideways at it until Marta showed us how to look at it in a mirror — she grinned when we finally saw what she meant. The place buzzed with schoolkids and older couples whispering in French or Spanish or something else entirely.

On the way back to Barcelona I kept thinking about that first breath of sea air in Calella and how different everything felt outside the city noise. It wasn’t what I expected at all — slower, softer somehow.
