The Experience

Hands stuffed in my jacket pockets, I was watching our guide unlock the van outside our hotel in Barcelona. He grinned and asked if we’d had coffee yet (we hadn’t), then promised we’d find something better in Girona. The road out of the city felt quieter than I expected for Spain — olive trees flickering past, a bit of drizzle on the windshield. By the time we reached Girona’s old town, the air smelled like stone after rain and someone nearby was roasting chestnuts. Our guide, Marc, pointed at the cathedral’s steps and said they filmed Game of Thrones here. I nearly tripped trying to imagine dragons swooping over those ancient walls.

We wandered through the Girona Jewish Quarter — honestly, it’s easy to get lost in those twisting alleys. Marc told us how families once lived above their shops here; you can still see mezuzahs carved into doorways if you look close enough. There was a moment on one of the bridges (the one designed by Eiffel — yes, that Eiffel) where I just stopped and stared at the Onyar River. The houses along it looked like someone had spilled a box of colored pencils into a storybook. I tried to take a photo but it didn’t really catch what it felt like standing there with all that history pressing in around you.

The drive to Figueres was quiet — maybe we were all thinking about those narrow streets or maybe just hungry. In Figueres, everything shifts: suddenly it’s Dalí everywhere. The Dalí Theatre-Museum is so much more than paintings on walls; it’s like stepping inside his mind (which is both fun and slightly unsettling). There’s this room where the furniture makes up Mae West’s face if you stand at just the right spot — our group took turns trying to line up our eyes with hers. The jewelry exhibit (“Dalí Joyas”) caught me off guard: gold melting clocks and ruby lips sparkling under glass. Not sure why but I keep remembering how cold the museum floors felt under my shoes.

I left thinking about how art can make even small towns feel enormous inside your head — or maybe that was just Dalí messing with us again. Anyway, we got dropped back at our hotel in Barcelona with tired feet and way too many photos on our phones. If you’re looking for a day trip from Barcelona that mixes old stones with wild imagination (and includes pickup so you don’t have to think too hard), this one sticks with you longer than you’d expect.
