The Experience

You notice the stone bridge before you hear the water — it’s just there, old and quiet, moss tucked into its cracks. Our guide, Jordi, told us it’s been here since the 1300s. I leaned over to watch the river slide underneath, cold even in June. The air felt different than Barcelona, sharper somehow. Someone behind me said they could smell pine needles when the wind shifted. I didn’t expect to feel so far away so quickly.

We stopped at Casa de la Vall next, this squat old house where Andorra’s government used to meet for centuries. Jordi explained bits of history while a couple of us ducked inside (it’s five euros if you want). I wandered up the side street instead — got distracted by a bakery window full of flaky pastries I couldn’t name. The old town isn’t big but it’s layered; every turn is another stone wall or tiny church. There was a woman sweeping her doorstep who nodded as we passed — I think she was humming?

The drive kept surprising me. We wound higher into the mountains until my ears popped and suddenly we were at this viewpoint with a glass platform jutting out over nothing. Some snow still clung to the peaks even though it was almost summer. There’s a statue of a man just standing there looking out — Jordi joked he’d been waiting for his coffee since last winter (the café was closed, so bring cash if you want to try your luck). I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.

Ordino was my favorite stop — narrow streets, slate roofs, everything quiet except for our footsteps and some distant church bells. Jordi pointed out houses from the 1600s and let us wander on our own for a bit. He offered to show us another village too, smaller and even quieter; said it’d be our secret if we wanted to go. By then I’d lost track of time in the best way.
