The Experience

The van picks you up from your Barcelona hotel in the early morning and heads inland toward Cardona. From Cardona, the drive continues to Montserrat, a natural park with distinctive peaks that rise 60 km from Barcelona. A Benedictine monastery has occupied these mountains for nearly 1,000 years, and the site has been a pilgrimage destination since ancient times—it sits on the route to Santiago de Compostela. You visit the Basilica of Montserrat, which houses the Black Virgin of Montserrat (the "Moreneta"), a 12th-century Romanesque carving and the patron saint of Catalonia.
