The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel between 8 and 9 am in a minivan. Your driver-guide takes you through the Old Town and up Montjuïc Mountain, where you see the Olympic Stadium and gardens built for the 1992 Barcelona Games, then pass Montjuïc Castle, which has held views of the city since the 17th century. From there the route drops to the waterfront (La Rambla, the Boqueria Market, the Columbus Monument) before the walking portion begins in the Gothic Quarter.

The Gothic Quarter walk covers the medieval core where Barcelona began. You move through narrow alleys and winding streets to the Royal Square, Plaça Sant Jaume (where the City Hall sits), and the Barcelona Gothic Cathedral, then into the Jewish Quarter, one of the oldest preserved neighborhoods in the city centre. The guide points out Roman-era corners and explains Catalan traditions as you go. After that, you drive through the Eixample district to Passeig de Gràcia, where you pass the modernist façades of Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and other landmark buildings designed by Gaudí and his contemporaries.
