The experience
The tour begins at Ulsan Amethyst Cavern Park, a former amethyst mine that opened to the public in 1997. The cave stretches over 2.5 kilometers and stays between 12–16°C year-round. Inside, you'll board a boat that glides through the underground passages, where amethyst and mineral formations line the artificial waterway. An exhibition hall displays the crystals, and you can even try mining amethyst yourself: a highlight for visitors of all ages.
From there, the route moves to Taehwagang Bamboo Forest, a 4.3-kilometer grove along the Taehwa River that offers a quiet contrast to the city. You walk beneath towering bamboo, listening to the wind move through it and watching for wildlife. The forest changes with seasons: lush green in spring and summer, vibrant foliage in autumn. Next comes the Daewangam Suspension Bridge, a 303-meter span across the East Sea with a gentle sway underfoot. The walk delivers a 360-degree view of deep blue water, jagged rocky cliffs, and ancient pine forests. Local folklore ties the spot to Queen Jaui of the Shilla Kingdom, who is said to have become a sea dragon to protect the nation.
Daewangam Park extends this coastal experience with over 15,000 pine trees, each more than 100 years old, surrounding rock formations like Yonggam (Dragon Cave) and a lighthouse. A metal bridge lets you walk above the sea for more East Sea views. The tour concludes at Oegosan Onggi Village, Korea's largest traditional pottery settlement with over 400 years of history. You watch master potters craft traditional earthenware using ancient techniques and can try making your own onggi: a hands-on encounter with Korean cultural heritage. The village also has a pottery museum and walking paths. The 9-hour itinerary includes time for lunch and travel between sites.
