The experience
The tour runs nine hours and covers four major stops across Gyeongju, the capital of the Silla dynasty during the 5th to 7th centuries. You travel in a private vehicle with your group only: no shared bus, no other travelers joining partway through. An official tour guide who speaks English, Korean, or Chinese (your choice at checkout) leads the day and explains the history at each site. Pickup happens at your Busan accommodation or train station, and the driver returns you there at the end of the day.
Bulguksa Temple is the first major stop: it was started in 751 under Prime Minister Kim Daeseong and designated Korea's first UNESCO cultural heritage site in 1995. Most buildings burned during the Japanese invasions, but the temple was fully restored over decades of excavation and reconstruction. Cheomseongdae Observatory, built in the 7th century under Queen Sondok, is the oldest astronomical observatory in the world and stands as National Treasure No. 31. It was used to watch the stars and track celestial events. The ancient tombs at Deareongwon are symbols of Silla power: 23 tombs in total, belonging to kings, queens and nobles, arranged like an open-air museum.
The day also includes Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, established in 679 as a banquet site for important state events and royal receptions. Both were restored in the 1980s and remain intact. Between the major sites, the route passes through Gyochon village (where a national university once stood during the Silla dynasty), and Hwanglidan Street, a neighborhood popular with younger travelers full of cafes, restaurants and shops. Hanbok (traditional Korean dress) experience is included at Gyochon village. The tour skips shopping stops entirely, so the full nine hours stays focused on the sites themselves.
