Skip the logistics and spend the day on the mountain instead

A private guided tour departing from Seoul hotels takes you to Seoraksan National Park, Korea's third-highest mountain, where you walk the valley or ride the cable car past Sinheoungsa Temple, then choose either the East Coast with its lighthouse and fish market or Nami Island, the filming location of Winter Sonata. Hotel pickup, lunch, park admission and all transport are included; the guide speaks English and handles the route so you don't have to.

10h–12h

  • Walk valley or ride cable car

  • Choose to visit Nami Island or East Coast

The Experience

The day starts at your Seoul hotel, where the driver picks you up and handles the full drive to Seoraksan. Once there, you visit Sinheoungsa, a traditional Buddhist temple set into the mountain, then move into the valley itself—the most beautiful stretch in Korea, according to the operator. You can walk it at an easy pace or take the cable car up; either way, you're looking at Daechongbong Peak, which tops out at 1,708 meters. The guide fills the drive with context on Korean politics, religion, society and nature, so the landscape makes sense as you move through it.

After the mountain, you choose your second stop. Nami Island is the famous one—it's where the Korean drama Winter Sonata was filmed, and it draws more visitors than anywhere else in the country. If you'd rather skip the crowds, the East Coast option takes you to Dongmyeong Port in Sokcho, where you can climb the lighthouse and look back at Mt Seorak from the water, then walk through the fish market and pick your own lunch from the catch that came in that morning.

The whole day runs 10 to 12 hours. Lunch, park entry, tolls and parking are all covered; the only thing you'd pay extra for is the cable car ticket if you want it instead of walking. Hotel drop-off happens at the end, so you don't need to navigate back to Seoul yourself.

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Seoul.

Top questions

How far is Mt Seorak from Seoul, and how much of the day is spent driving?

Mt Seorak sits near Sokcho in eastern South Korea, about two hours from Seoul. The drive takes up a chunk of the 10- to 12-hour day, but the guide uses it to teach you about Korea as you go, so it's not dead time.

Can I walk the Mt Seorak valley, or do I have to take the cable car?

You can choose. The valley walk is graded as easy, so most fitness levels can handle it. The cable car is available if you'd rather ride, but it's not included in the tour price—you pay for it separately if you want it.

What's the difference between the Nami Island option and the East Coast option?

Nami Island is where Winter Sonata was filmed and draws heavy crowds; it's the most famous tourist attraction in Korea. The East Coast takes you to Dongmyeong Port and Sokcho's fish market instead, where you get a quieter, more local experience and can pick your own lunch from the morning's catch.

Is lunch included, and do I get to choose what I eat?

Lunch is included. If you pick the East Coast, you walk through the fish market and choose your own meal from the fresh fish available that day. On the Nami Island route, lunch is arranged as part of the tour.

Do I need to arrange my own transportation to the tour, or does the driver pick me up?

The driver picks you up at your Seoul hotel and drops you off there at the end of the day. You don't need a car or need to find your way to the starting point.

Is this tour wheelchair accessible?

Yes. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, transportation is wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all physical fitness levels. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller.
