The Experience

I almost missed the studio — I took a wrong turn after the subway, distracted by a street vendor frying something that smelled like sesame oil and garlic. When I finally found the little sign for “Bapsang,” my shoes were already dusted with sand from Haeundae Beach. The host, Minji, greeted me with this big smile and handed me a traditional apron (she called it “jeogori” — I probably said it wrong). We started with a welcome drink, something floral and cold. It was honestly a relief after my little detour.

Minji had us taste different Korean sauces first — gochujang, doenjang, soy sauce — and explained where each one comes from. She told us about her family’s recipes while we chopped vegetables for bibimbap. The kitchen filled up with the sound of knives on wood and someone’s nervous laugh (okay, mine) when my pancake batter stuck to the pan. There was this moment when we all sat on the floor around the low table, eating what we’d made. My knees weren’t thrilled but somehow it felt right — like being part of someone’s home for an afternoon.

After lunch, Minji poured us tea and brought out these tiny rice cakes. She asked about our travels and gave tips for exploring Haeundae (“try the night market!”). I left with a certificate (which made me laugh), but mostly I remember how she talked about food as memory. The sea breeze followed me back outside; I still think about that salty air mixing with warm rice and soy sauce — it just sticks with you, you know?

What’s included

Your day includes all cooking ingredients, use of a traditional palace-style apron, welcome drink on arrival, tasting of Korean sauces before hands-on cooking time, lunch at either a floor bapsang or regular table depending on comfort, tea with dessert after your meal, plus a participation certificate to take home before heading out to explore more of Haeundae.
