Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Lesedi Cultural Village and buffet
- Drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria
- Guided tour of South African homesteads
- Enjoy Pan African buffet at Nyama Choma Restaurant
The experience
The tour starts with a pickup from your Johannesburg hotel and a drive to Lesedi, "The Place of Light", a recreated village built around the daily life and traditions of different South African communities. Once there, a guide leads you through each homestead on foot, explaining the architecture, customs and history of the Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, Ndebele and Pedi peoples. You move between villages at your own pace, stopping to watch craftspeople at work and ask questions about what you're seeing.
After the guided walk, you move to the Nyama Choma Restaurant for a seated lunch. The buffet draws from Eastern and Southern African cuisines, not a single country's food, but a spread across the region. You eat at a table, not standing in line, and can return for seconds. The meal is included in the tour price. Drinks and tips are separate.
The whole outing runs four hours from pickup to drop-off. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the guide speaks English throughout. If you use a wheelchair or travel with a stroller, the site and transport are both accessible. Infant car seats are available on request when you book.

What exactly do I see when I visit each homestead at Lesedi?
Each homestead is built to show how a particular ethnic group traditionally lived: the layout of huts, the arrangement of livestock areas, the materials used for building. A guide walks you through and explains the customs and daily routines of that community. You'll see craftspeople demonstrating traditional skills, and you can ask them directly about their work.
How long is the drive from Johannesburg to Lesedi Cultural Village?
The drive is about an hour each way from Johannesburg. The total tour, including the guided walk and lunch, takes four hours from the time you're picked up at your hotel.
What kind of food is served at the Nyama Choma Restaurant?
The Nyama Choma Restaurant serves a Pan-African buffet with dishes from Eastern and Southern Africa. You sit at a table and can eat as much as you want. The meal is included in your tour price.
Is this tour accessible if I use a wheelchair or travel with young children?
