The experience
The drive out of Johannesburg takes you through leafy suburbs and into countryside, and your guide starts teaching you about the tribes along the way: the Zulu and their fighting sticks, the Xhosa with their trademark blankets, the Pedi and their drums and whistles. By the time you arrive at Lesedi, roughly an hour from your hotel, the landscape has shifted from city to traditional setting.
Once there, you're split into small groups to move through the homesteads in their traditional setup. Each tribe's space shows how they live and what matters to them, including the dowry system, where payment is made in cows and the amount varies by tribe. You taste local cuisine before heading back to the van for the return drive to Johannesburg.
