Step-by-step itinerary
Visit cultural village and Sterkfontein Caves
- Explore Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho, Ndebele villages
- Watch traditional African dance and music
- Optional late lunch with African food
- Visit Sterkfontein Caves at Cradle of Humankind
- See fossils of Mrs Ples and Little Foot
The experience
The Sterkfontein Caves are the centerpiece: a working archaeological site where "Mrs Ples," the "Taung Child" and "Little Foot" were discovered, and where digging continues. You stand inside the cave where these 4.6-million-year-old homosapien ancestors were found, making it genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime moment rather than a turn of phrase. The caves reopened after two years of closure, so access is still relatively fresh.
Lesedi Cultural Village is the second half. You're transported into the homesteads of five South African tribes (Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele), and meet the people who live there. The dancing and singing are described as the best African entertainment in the area. You join the performers for the traditional celebration and storytelling. If you want to extend the day, a late lunch at 5 pm serves true African food, though this costs extra and is booked separately.
Your guide is Shane, who wrote "White Boy," a memoir of growing up in South Africa, so the cultural context comes with real depth. The vehicle is air-conditioned and has free WiFi. Early pickup times (7 or 7:30 am) are set to fit the caves into the day. On Mondays, when Sterkfontein is closed, the tour pivots to Maropeng museum instead.
