The tour starts at Freedom Square, where the Freedom Charter was signed in 1955 by the Congress of the People—a document that laid out the vision for a democratic South Africa. The square still hosts a daily market for fruit and vegetables, and the guide explains what that moment meant and how it shaped what came next. From there you walk to Orlando Towers, the tallest landmark in Soweto, covered in murals that show daily life in the township. The towers sit in what locals call Power Park and are known for bungee jumping, though the real draw here is what the art on the walls tells you about the place.

Orlando East comes next, with the original brick houses built when the township started—people call them matchbox houses because of their size. This is where you learn about the soccer heritage that still runs through Soweto; Orlando Pirates is the biggest club. Then the guide takes you through the story of the 1976 Soweto uprising, when students protested the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction. That protest is regarded as the beginning of the end of apartheid, and it changed the country.
