The experience
Soweto's role in the struggle against apartheid anchors the first half of the day. The Hector Pieterson Museum takes about 30 minutes and documents the 1976 youth uprising through the stories of those who lived it. Mandela House, where Nelson Mandela lived before his imprisonment, sits on Vilakazi Street: the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize laureates once lived. You'll also see Orlando Towers, the cooling towers at the heart of Soweto, and learn their place in the town's history.
After Soweto, the tour heads to Lesedi Cultural Village in North West, where you spend about two hours exploring the traditions of different South African cultures. A traditional dance performance closes the day and is described as the highlight of the experience. Lunch at a local Soweto restaurant and snacks throughout the day are part of the package.
Hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the tour, and a driver-guide leads the whole day. You choose between a morning or mid-morning departure depending on what fits your schedule.
