Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Lesedi Cultural Village and feast
- Visit five traditional villages
- Listen to traditional music and stories
- Enjoy local tribal dancing
- Dine at Nyama Choma restaurant
The experience
Lesedi Cultural Village sits outside Johannesburg and recreates five separate traditional settlements side by side. You move through each one (Xhosa, Zulu, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele) listening to traditional music and stories told by the people who live there. The villages are built to show how each group lived, and the guide explains the differences in their customs, architecture and daily life as you walk between them.
After the villages, you watch traditional dancing performed live, then head to the Nyama Choma restaurant on the grounds. The name means Great African Feast, and the buffet reflects that: an extensive menu of African dishes including game like crocodile and ostrich, alongside more familiar options. The restaurant is split into three theme areas representing North Africa, East Africa and South Africa, so the meal itself becomes another part of the cultural experience.
The tour runs about six hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Your local guide travels with you throughout, and the live entertainment and performances are woven into the afternoon rather than set apart as a separate show. Vegetarian options are available if you request them when booking.
