The experience

Constitution Hill anchors the day. The site was a prison and military fort that held many of South Africa's most famous anti-apartheid figures. Today it houses the Constitutional Court, which upholds citizens' rights. You walk the grounds and enter the court building itself: a living museum of the country's journey from that turbulent past to democracy. The Carlton Centre comes first, a 223-meter building that held the title of Africa's tallest and once ranked among the world's highest. From the Top of Africa observation deck on the 50th floor, you get a 360-degree view of the city's dense core spreading outward to the countryside.

Soweto's two stops anchor the afternoon half. Mandela House, at 8115 Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, is the four-room home where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. The rooms now hold family photographs, paintings and memorabilia, including a pair of his old boots on display: a tangible detail of the man South Africans call Tata, or father. The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, also in Orlando West, documents the role of students in the anti-apartheid struggle, particularly the Soweto protests of June 16, 1976, when high school students took to the streets against the mandatory use of Afrikaans in black secondary schools.

The guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout. Bottled water is provided. All sites are wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Pickup is included in the booking.

What is Constitution Hill and why does it matter to South African history?

Constitution Hill is a former prison and military fort that imprisoned many of South Africa's most renowned anti-apartheid leaders and activists. Today it is home to the Constitutional Court, which protects the rights of all citizens, making it both a museum of the country's turbulent past and a symbol of its democratic present.

Can I actually go inside Mandela's house in Soweto?

Yes. Mandela House at 8115 Vilakazi Street in Orlando West is now the Mandela Family Museum. You walk through the four interconnected rooms that contain family photographs, paintings, memorabilia and personal items like a pair of Mandela's old boots, giving a direct sense of how he lived there between 1946 and 1962.

What does the Hector Pieterson Memorial cover?

The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Orlando West commemorates the Soweto protests of June 16, 1976, when high school students protested against the mandatory use of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in black secondary schools. Many of those students were shot by apartheid police during the peaceful demonstration.

What is the Carlton Centre and what will I see from the top?

The Carlton Centre is Africa's tallest building at 223 meters high, standing in central Johannesburg. From the Top of Africa observation deck on the 50th floor, you see a 360-degree panorama of the city's dense cityscape and outward toward the countryside and beyond.
