The experience
Constitutional Hill is where the tour begins: a one-hour guided walk through the old jail and the constitutional court of South Africa, the building that replaced it. From there the route moves through Johannesburg's center: across the Nelson Mandela Bridge with its views of the city and the commuter trains running beneath it, then into Newtown, where graffiti and street art cover the walls of what was once a mining camp. The drive shows you the scale of change: the neighborhoods where migrant workers were housed, the government homes and informal settlements, and Baragwanath Hospital, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Soweto is the second half of the day. The old power station there has been transformed into an entertainment complex with a food court and painted towers. You stop for pictures and have the option to walk around. The Hector Petersen Memorial stands nearby: the site of the famous photograph taken during the 1976 uprising, with the museum documenting that moment. Mandela House and the Nelson Mandela Museum are also in this area, with restaurants, gift shops and art and craft vendors. Entry to both Constitutional Hill and Mandela House is included. You can choose to spend time at any of these stops depending on what interests you most.
The tour runs five hours total, with about an hour and five minutes of driving time to and from your starting point. Your guide speaks English and drives. Water is provided. The route is wheelchair accessible, and families with infants can bring a pram or stroller. If you want to eat, you'll find options at the power station complex in Soweto, though meals are on your own account.
