The full day matters because the story doesn't fit into a morning or an afternoon — it needs the whole arc, from the Hillbrow Tower that dominates the skyline down to Vilakazi Street in Soweto, where Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu actually lived. The guide picks you up from your hotel in Johannesburg or Pretoria and the vehicle is air-conditioned, which you'll appreciate because you're moving through a lot of ground and a lot of history that's not always comfortable to sit with.

The tour starts in the city center — Constitution Hill, which used to be a prison and military fort, now holds South Africa's Constitutional Court. You walk through the same corridors where political prisoners were held, and it's the kind of place that makes the abstract idea of apartheid suddenly concrete. After that you move through Newtown, which has art galleries and theaters now but was built on mining heritage; you'll see the old mining equipment still standing, headgear and stamp presses, the physical remnants of the gold rush that built this entire city back in 1886.
