The Experience

You're strapped in next to an instructor who has done this hundreds of times, and you're thinking: this is actually happening. The hike up Lion's Head or the short walk from Signal Hill parking takes maybe twenty minutes, and then you're standing at the edge looking down at the whole city — Sea Point spreading out below, the Twelve Apostles ridge running east, Clifton's beaches tiny and perfect. The wind is reading the mountain the way your instructor reads it, and when they say go, you step off into air that holds you up.

Tandem paragliding in Cape Town means you're not doing the work — your instructor handles the glider, the thermals, the landing approach — but you're absolutely in it. The flight lasts anywhere from eight to fifteen minutes depending on what the weather gives you that day, and Hi5 Tandem Paragliding stretches it as long as possible. The logistics are handled: your arrival time and takeoff location get confirmed two hours before you're booked, so there's no guessing. Parking is free at both sites — next to the Signal Hill lookout or at the Lion's Head trailhead — and after you land (usually at Seapoint promenade or the Glen Country Club fields), they shuttle you back to your car for free. You need to be at least fourteen years old and weigh between twenty-five and a hundred kilograms. The whole thing, from parking to being back at your vehicle, takes a couple of hours, but the actual flight is the part you'll keep replaying.
