Summary

Soaring over Cape Town’s city bowl and ocean with local pilots

You’ll step off Signal Hill or Lion’s Head with an experienced pilot and float over Cape Town’s city bowl and coastline. Feel the rush of wind, spot Robben Island from above, and land near Camps Bay or Sea Point — all gear included. There’s nothing quite like seeing Table Mountain from midair.

We jogged a few awkward steps off Signal Hill — not really running, more like stumbling into the sky. The harness felt snug but safe, and then suddenly my feet weren’t touching anything. Our pilot, Musa, just grinned and pointed out Robben Island in the haze. I could smell the sea even up here, mixed with that dry mountain air. It was quieter than I expected, except for the wind flapping at my ears and Musa’s voice in my helmet, calm as ever.

The city looked almost fake from above — tiny taxis inching along, patches of green where I guess people picnic on weekends. We drifted toward Camps Bay, sometimes dipping lower so close to the slopes that I could see hikers waving (or maybe they were warning us about my terrified face). The flight didn’t last forever — maybe 15 minutes? Hard to say. Time is weird when you’re floating. But I remember my hands shaking a bit when we landed on the grass near the Bungalow restaurant. Musa high-fived me and laughed at how wobbly my legs were.

I still think about how light everything felt up there — worries, weight, even time itself kind of slipped away for a bit. If you’re in Cape Town and want to see Table Mountain from a totally different angle (literally), this tandem paragliding thing is wild. Not sure I’d ever get used to it, but part of me wants to try again just for that first lift-off feeling.
