You’ll launch from Signal Hill with a local guide, glide above Cape Town’s coastline with Table Mountain beside you, steer the paraglider for a moment if you want, and maybe get your heart racing with some aerial twists before landing gently back on solid ground.
I still remember the first rush of air — not cold exactly, but sharp, like my skin woke up all at once. We’d barely run three steps off Signal Hill and suddenly Cape Town was just… underneath us. My instructor, Sipho, grinned and pointed out Lion’s Head straight away. The city looked smaller than I expected. I could smell the sea even though we were so high up — or maybe that was just my brain making things up. It felt like floating and falling at the same time.
Sipho kept chatting, totally calm, telling me stories about flying here for years. He showed me Robben Island off in the distance (I squinted — it really is tiny from up there). He let me steer for a bit — which was both thrilling and slightly terrifying; my hands got sweaty on the lines. At one point he asked if I wanted “some adrenaline” and before I could answer, we swooped sideways and my stomach did a full flip. I laughed so hard I almost forgot to look around.
The whole tandem paragliding flight lasted maybe fifteen minutes? Hard to say — time got weird up there. There were other gliders nearby but it never felt crowded; mostly just wind in my ears and flashes of sunlight on the water far below. When we landed (smoothly, thank goodness), someone from their team helped unclip everything and handed me back my shoes — I’d kicked one halfway off in midair without noticing. So yeah, don’t wear loose shoes.
