The experience
A 45-minute drive from Greenock along the River Clyde and over the Erskine Bridge brings you into the Highlands and Luss, the first stop on the western shore of Loch Lomond. You walk past sandstone and slate cottages to the pier, where views open across to Ben Lomond. The graveyard here holds graves dating back to 600 or 700 AD, plus an 11th-century Viking grave marked with a Hogback Stone. From Luss, a 27-minute drive through Arrochar takes you into steep-sided glens to The Rest and Be Thankful, a high mountain pass where travellers and drovers have stopped for centuries. The name comes from the relief of reaching the top after the long climb out of Glen Croe.
Inveraray sits 23 minutes south, a picture-perfect village at the head of Loch Fyne where you can browse shops for Scottish products and souvenirs. The village has cafés and a sit-down area, though many visitors head to the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, a 12-minute drive away, which has a deli, takeaway and outdoor seating. Inveraray Castle and Gardens stand nearby if you choose to visit (entry fees apply, the castle is closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Your guide can adjust the time you spend here depending on what you want to do. A 20-minute scenic drive brings you to Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, built around 1450 and now abandoned but still striking, ringed by mountains both near and distant.
The return journey is a 65-minute scenic drive along the east shore of Loch Fyne and through the Cowal Peninsula's thickly wooded glens to Kirn, where you board an open ferry for a 15-minute crossing of the Firth of Clyde to Gourock. Your cruise ship becomes visible during the crossing. From the ferry it's a 10-minute journey back to Greenock Ocean Terminal.
