Loch Lomond, Highland Cows & Doune Castle: Private Half-Day Tour
Four stops, one guide, your group alone: Loch Lomond's villages, castle and Highland Cows in a morning or afternoon
A private guided tour of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park takes you through Luss village on the loch's banks, to Kilmahog to meet and feed Highland Cows, through the Victorian town of Callander, and to Doune Castle—a 14th-century fortress used in Monty Python, Outlander and Game of Thrones. Your guide is yours alone, the vehicle is yours alone, and the five-hour route includes three hours of driving and two hours at the attractions themselves. Bottled water and Scottish snacks are provided; entry to Doune Castle is optional at £10 per person.
Step-by-step itinerary
Loch Lomond and surrounding sights
- Explore the village of Luss
- Meet and feed Highland Cows at Kilmahog
- Visit shops and cafes in Callander
- Tour Doune Castle
The Experience
The tour begins in Luss, a village on the banks of Loch Lomond that has been voted Scotland's most beautiful. You get 30 minutes to walk the heritage streets, stand at the pier for views across the water, and spot the rare Viking Hogback gravestone tucked into the village. From there the route heads to Kilmahog, where you meet and feed the famous Scottish Highland Cows—the shaggy, long-horned cattle that define the Highlands visually and are the reason many travelers book this tour in the first place.
Callander comes next, a small town that became a Victorian-era holiday destination for people escaping industrial cities. It has kept that character: you'll have an hour to browse independent shops, sit in cafes, or grab lunch from the restaurants scattered through the town center. The final stop is Doune Castle, a 14th-century fortress with one of Scotland's best-preserved great halls. It's recognizable to fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander (where it stood in for Castle Leoch) and Game of Thrones (the pilot's Winterfell). Entry is optional; if you skip it, you'll still see the exterior and the grounds. The drive back to your accommodation closes the five hours.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or one of two other languages—you choose at booking. The vehicle is yours alone: you can pick a sedan, SUV, minivan or larger people carrier depending on your group size and comfort. Air conditioning, parking fees and bottled water are included. The operator notes that UK sedan cars are smaller than American ones, so if you're booking four adults into a four-seat sedan, space will be tight.

How much time do I actually spend at each stop on this tour?
Luss gets 30 minutes to explore the village and pier; Kilmahog is a shorter stop to meet and feed the Highland Cows; Callander gives you a full hour to shop, eat or walk around; Doune Castle is the final attraction, with time to see the exterior and grounds (entry inside is optional). The remaining time is spent driving—three hours total across the route.
What exactly is Doune Castle and why is it famous?
Doune Castle is a 14th-century medieval fortress with one of Scotland's best-preserved great halls. It was filmed as Castle Leoch in the TV series Outlander, as Winterfell in the Game of Thrones pilot, and appears in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Entry inside costs £10 per person (concession and children's tickets are available), but it's optional—you can see the castle and grounds from outside if you prefer.
Can I feed the Highland Cows myself, or is it a demonstration?
You meet and feed the Highland Cows at Kilmahog yourself—that's the hands-on part of the stop. They're the famous long-horned Scottish cattle, and the feeding is what makes this stop memorable for most travelers.
Is this tour private to my group, or will I share the vehicle with other travelers?
This is a private tour: the guide, vehicle and itinerary are yours alone. You choose the vehicle type at checkout—sedan, SUV, minivan or larger people carrier—depending on your group size and preference.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or one of two additional languages. You select the language when you book.
What's included in the tour price, and what costs extra?
The tour includes a private guide, air-conditioned vehicle, parking fees, bottled water and Scottish snacks. Entry to Doune Castle is optional and costs £10 per person (with concession and children's rates available). The guide's gratuity is also optional.
