The Experience

I didn’t expect the air in Luss to smell so green — like wet leaves and something sweet from all those flowers. We’d barely left Glasgow when our driver-guide (I think his name was Callum?) started telling us stories about old clan feuds and Vikings, just as the houses thinned out and the landscape got all wild and lumpy. There’s this tiny church in Luss where he pointed out a Viking grave — I tried to imagine what kind of person ended up there, but mostly I was distracted by a dog barking somewhere down by the loch. It felt peaceful, but with a bit of history humming underneath.

The boat cruise on Loch Lomond was optional, so half of us went for it. I’m glad I did — you get this different view from the water, with hills piling up around you and gulls skimming past. The wind was colder than I expected (bring an extra layer), but it woke me up in a good way. Someone on board tried to spot “hairy coos” through their binoculars — no luck yet. If you skip the cruise, there’s Balloch Country Park nearby; heard someone say it’s good for stretching your legs if boats aren’t your thing.

After that we wound our way through the Trossachs — Callum called it “the Highlands in miniature,” which made me laugh because nothing here feels small. We stopped somewhere along Duke’s Pass for photos and lunch (I grabbed soup at a café; wish I’d remembered what kind). The light kept changing — sun one minute, drizzle the next — so every photo looked different. And then finally Stirling Castle appeared on its crag, looking like it might just shrug off the modern world if it wanted.

Inside Stirling Castle you get 90 minutes to wander. There were kids running around pretending to be knights (honestly, I kind of wanted to join them). Some rooms are lavish, others feel almost haunted — Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here as a baby, which is wild when you stand in that echoey hall. By then my feet were tired but my head was full of odd facts and half-imagined scenes from centuries ago. On the drive back to Glasgow, someone fell asleep behind me. I still think about that view over Loch Lomond though — it sneaks up on you later.
