The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect from the Edge of the World. The name sounded kind of dramatic, but then you’re bouncing along in this surprisingly comfy 4x4 (our driver joked about “old bones” being safe) and suddenly the city’s gone. There’s just rocks, sand, and that weird quiet you only get in big deserts. We stopped at this gazelle reserve first—honestly, I thought it’d be like a zoo but it’s open land. Saw a few gazelles darting around; they move so light it’s almost funny. Our guide, Faisal, told us they’re called reem here. I tried to say it—he laughed at my accent but seemed pleased I tried.

The drive out to the cliffs was bumpier than I thought (hold onto your water bottle), but then you see these crazy high drops just appearing out of nowhere. It’s not like anything I’ve seen before—no fences or warning signs, just wind and space. We hiked up to one of the peaks together; Faisal pointed out some old camel trails winding below us. The sun started dipping behind the rocks and everything turned gold for a minute. Someone handed around dates and little cups of Arabic coffee—the cardamom smell hit me first. I still think about that view with my hands sticky from dates and sand getting everywhere.

We had this simple picnic right on a rug thrown over the stones—not fancy but somehow perfect after all that walking. People mostly just sat quietly or took photos; even Faisal got kind of quiet for a bit. The wind picked up as it got dark and we packed up slowly, nobody really wanting to leave yet.
