The experience
The tour opens at Rupea Citadel, a fortress built starting in the 14th century on Cohalmului Hill and expanded through the 17th century as both a stronghold and refuge for surrounding villages. From its position at the junction of roads connecting Transylvania, Moldova and Wallachia, it commanded trade and craft routes for centuries. Documents from the 15th century list twelve active guilds inside its walls. You climb to the citadel overlooking the city below.
Next is Viscri, a 14th-century Saxon village with rustic streets and a UNESCO-listed fortified church known as the White Church. The stop includes time to walk the village, visit the church, and meet local peasants who offer homemade palinca (brandy) and hand-made products. You can taste the fruit syrup called socata. The village preserves the settlement pattern and architecture the Saxon colonists established centuries ago.
Sighisoara, the final stop, is one of Europe's most intact inhabited medieval citadels and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow streets lined with brightly colored houses open onto the central square. The city was born as a strategic and commercial hub at Central Europe's edges and remains one of the few fortified towns still lived in. You visit the house where Vlad Tepes, known as Dracula, was born in 1431. The medieval architecture and layout have been preserved in detail across the old town.
