The Experience

“You know, Dracula never actually lived here,” Andrei grinned as we stood outside Bran Castle, mist curling around the stone like it was on cue. He’d already told us three stories about Vlad the Impaler by then, but this one stuck — I guess because he laughed at his own joke. We started early from Brasov’s city center (I almost missed the Modarom building, but there’s a big yellow sign), and the drive out felt like slipping into another century. The Carpathians were half-hidden behind clouds, which made everything feel a bit mysterious — or maybe that was just me not fully awake yet.

Peles Castle was our first stop. I’d seen photos before, but walking up those steps with the gardens all wet from last night’s rain felt different. The marble was cold under my hand. Inside, Andrei pointed out secret doors and explained how Romanian kings used to sneak away for chess games (or something more interesting — he winked). The woodwork smelled faintly sweet and dusty; I kept staring at the stained glass until my neck hurt. There were only seven of us in our group, so it never felt rushed or crowded. Someone asked if you could get lost in here — honestly? Probably.

Sinaia Monastery came next, quieter than I expected. A monk passed by and nodded without saying anything — his robe brushed against the old stones and made this soft shhh sound. The church itself is painted in colors I can’t really describe (blue? gold? both?), and there’s this calm that settles over you when you step inside. I tried lighting a candle but fumbled with the matches; Li laughed and helped me out. It smelled like beeswax and something green from the gardens outside.

Bran Castle was last — all sharp towers and narrow stairs that creaked under our feet. It’s smaller than it looks in movies but somehow feels more real for it. Andrei told us about Queen Marie’s tea parties here (not vampires), which made me smile thinking about how stories get twisted over time. On the way back to Brasov, we took a different route through the Bucegi Mountains; windows down, cold air in our faces, everyone a little tired but happy. I still think about that view sometimes when things are too noisy at home.
