The Experience

You wake up in Brasov and suddenly you’re in a van gliding through pine forests, the kind that look almost too green. Our guide, Mihai, greeted us with that quiet Romanian warmth—he had cold water waiting and didn’t rush anyone. The drive to Sinaia passed in a blur of misty hills. I kept staring out the window, half-listening to Mihai explain how Carol I built Peles Castle as a summer place (imagine having 160 rooms just for summer). When we finally walked inside, the smell of old wood and something faintly floral hit me—maybe it was the polish or just centuries of stories soaked into those walls. I tried to picture royal dinners here but mostly just felt small under all that carved ceiling.

Sinaia Monastery was next—smaller than I expected, quiet except for a bell somewhere out back. An old woman crossed herself at the door and smiled when she caught me watching. Mihai told us about the monks who still live there; he said sometimes they’ll talk if you ask gently, but today they were shadows in the garden. We stopped for lunch (Mihai picked the spot—a place with thick soup and bread still warm from the oven) before heading on toward Rasnov Fortress. The fortress sits on this rocky hill above everything; climbing up made my legs burn but also gave me one of those silly grins you get when you see a view you weren’t expecting. Wind whipped around us and there was this sharp mineral smell in the air—like stone after rain.

I’d heard about Bran Castle forever (Dracula stuff), but standing outside it is different—the towers are colder than they look in photos, and inside it’s all narrow stairways and echoes.
