Your car leaves Brasov at 8am heading south toward the Bucegi Mountains, and within thirty minutes you're standing in front of Bran Castle—the 14th-century hilltop fortress that inspired Dracula. The castle sits on a ridge overlooking the village of Bran, and your guide walks you through the connection between the stone walls and Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century nobleman imprisoned here in 1462. Inside, Gothic furniture and old weaponry fill the rooms, and the story of how a brutal historical figure became a vampire legend unfolds as you move through them. You pay entry at the gate (not included), then explore at your own pace while your guide waits.

After Bran, the minivan loops back toward Brasov and heads to the Saxon fortified churches—Harman and Prejmer. Prejmer is the one you'll remember. Built in 1427 to withstand Ottoman attacks, it's a UNESCO-listed fortress-church with walls 14 meters high and 5 meters thick. You enter through a 5-meter tunnel carved into the stone, and the Latin cross layout and Gothic style are still intact after nearly six centuries. Harman, a Roman basilica with Gothic additions, sits nearby—its west tower, chapels and water moat are original, and 13th-century paintings still hang inside. The Saxons who built these structures arrived in Transylvania in the 12th century and left their mark on the entire region, but these two churches are what survived.

The tour runs about eight hours total, with transport, stops and walking included. Your guide speaks English and holds a sign at the meeting point in central Brasov (in front of the George Barițiu Library on Bulevardul Eroilor). Hotel pickup is included if you're staying in the city; if you're outside the old town, timing adjusts based on your location. Sturdy footwear matters—the tunnel at Prejmer is narrow and the ground uneven, and you'll be on your feet moving between sites.
