The Experience

The day didn’t start exactly as planned — I forgot my scarf in the hotel lobby and only realized halfway to Rasnov Fortress. Inside, it’s all creaky floors and narrow stairways; I banged my elbow trying to squeeze past a group taking selfies in front of Vlad the Impaler’s portrait (he really does look intense). Andrei told stories about Vlad that sounded half true and half legend — honestly, I’m not sure which parts I believe now. The whole place smells faintly of old wood and maybe something herbal? Hard to pin down.

I ducked into the Tea House in the castle courtyard for a coffee and tried coliva — funeral cake, which sounds odd but tastes like sweet walnut porridge with rum. The woman behind the counter smiled when I hesitated over how to pronounce it (“Co-lee-va,” she corrected gently). There’s also this little market by the castle gates where you can buy wool socks or painted masks; Andrei pointed out his favorite stall but I got distracted by someone grilling sausages nearby. We had time to wander before heading back to Brasov — honestly, I wish we’d lingered longer just watching people come and go under those spiky towers.
