The experience

You leave Brasov in the morning heading toward three sites that survived centuries of Ottoman pressure on Transylvania's frontier. Rupea Fortress comes first: one of the medieval monuments that held its ground through the region's most dangerous centuries. From there you move into Viscri, a village built around a UNESCO-listed fortified church. You'll see the church itself and stop at the village blacksmith, a working reminder of how these settlements functioned.

Sighisoara is where the day opens up. A guided walk through the medieval center takes roughly an hour and a half, moving through streets that have barely changed since the 1400s. The Clock Tower anchors the tour. It was the main gate into the citadel and once housed the town council. You visit Vlad Dracul House, where Vlad the Impaler was born, and descend into the Torture Room at the foot of the tower, the actual chamber where medieval prisoners were held. The Church on the Hill sits at the top of 175 covered wooden steps (the Scholars' Stairs), a climb that rewards you with views over the whole town. After the guided portion, you have free time to walk the streets and pick up souvenirs before heading back to Brasov.
