The experience

You start from your hotel and drive toward Peles Castle, the former summer residence of Romania's first king, Carol I, built in the second half of the 19th century. The castle stands as a symbol of the Romanian royal family's legacy, and your guide walks you through its rooms and grounds to tell the story of the kings who lived there. From there, the route continues into Transylvania proper (the region's name means "the country beyond the forest"), and you reach Bran Castle, the medieval fortress that became famous through the Count Dracula legend. The castle itself is a real 14th-century construction, and your guide separates fact from fiction as you explore its rooms and towers.

The day ends in Brasov, where you stop in the Old City center and visit the Council Square and the Black Church, the largest Gothic building in Eastern Europe. The full route takes 12 hours from pickup to drop-off, though traffic to the mountain area can add time on weekends and holidays, sometimes pushing the return to 9 or 10 p.m. The order of the three stops may shift depending on the season, weather and the castles' opening hours: Peles Castle closes Mondays and Tuesdays year-round, and all of November for maintenance, in which case you'd visit Pelisor Castle instead.
